The holiday season â€“ itâ€™s that wonderful time of celebration, gift-giving, parties, and of course, eating.
With potlucks happening every week, dinners with the family, and boxes of chocolates just casually floating around desks at work, itâ€™s easy to lose track of healthy eating habits.
This means most of us will put on a couple of pounds by New Years. Although it doesnâ€™t sound like much, it can add up each year.
Dr. Pearl Arjomand, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine at Cloud Care Clinics has shared seven useful tips on how to avoid weight gain during these weeks of temptation.
1. Eat a healthy meal before you go to a party!Â Never, ever show up hungry. If you do, you will quickly find yourself diving into the eggnog, fruitcake, and gingerbread cookies. By preparing yourself a meal high in healthy sources of protein, veggies, and a few complex carbs before you head out to a buffet means that youâ€™ll be less likely to pig out on bad food.
2. Eat small portions.Â Remember youâ€™re likely going to eat as much as you put in front of you. Pick a little plate, or a skinnier glass. Share large meals with a friend, or take the left overs home. Serve less = eat less
3. Decrease the carbs.Â Try and stay away from the â€œwhiteâ€ foods (ex. White breads, potatoes, white rice, cookies) as these will often make you feel bloated and tired after you eat them. Make carbs the smallest portion of your plate, and choose whole grain options instead.
4. Drink water, water, and more water.Â Fill your belly up with water instead of drinks loaded in sugar. Lots of calories that are often not accounted for are hidden in our drinks! Remember, a can of Coca Cola has 39 grams of sugar. Thatâ€™s 10 cubes of sugar!
